More than 65 Jacksonville firefighters fought a three-alarm fire
at the Chelsea Courtyards apartments early this afternoon and found one person dead.
The blaze started about 12:45 p.m. on the second floor and crews
shut down the 2200 block of University Boulevard North. Smoke could be seen for miles. The fire department had all but a few
hot spots out by 1:20 p.m.
Spokesman Tom Francis said firefighters pulled a few people out
of the fire and one man and one woman were taken to separate hospitals with minor injuries. He said that when firefighters
arrived, flames were shooting through the roof and had consumed the second floor.
He said the unidentified woman who died was in Apartment #20. He
said no cause has been determined but that many of the 26 units were heavily damaged. The Red Cross currently is addressing
the emergency needs of 11 families, said spokeswoman Christian Smith...
The other person transported to the hospital was a woman rescued
from a second floor window by firefighters, Adams said. Francis said both people had minor injuries.
Francis said one firefighter also had minor injuries.
